How to Get Cited by ChatGPT and Perplexity
Ranking on Google and being cited in an AI answer are different games. The second one is easier right now, and most businesses are not playing it.
A growing share of buyers now ask an AI instead of searching. They get one answer with a handful of citations, and if you are not in those citations you do not exist for that question.
The good news is that getting cited is currently easier than ranking, because the field is emptier and the criteria are different.
Answer the question in the first forty words
AI models lift passages. They are looking for a self-contained chunk that answers the question cleanly.
So put a direct answer at the top of the page, forty to sixty words, before any build-up. Not a hook. Not context. The answer.
Most business content is written the opposite way, with three paragraphs of warm-up before the point. That structure gets skipped.
Be the specific source
Models favour content with things they can verify: named standards, real numbers, dates, technical terms, proper nouns.
Generic content is unciteable because there is nothing in it to attribute. "Improving your marketing can boost revenue" cites nothing. "Under the current standard, the requirement is X, which changed in 2024" is a citation waiting to happen.
This is the single biggest gap in most business writing. It is all adjectives and no facts.
Structure it so a machine can parse it
Question-shaped headings. Short paragraphs. Lists where the content is genuinely a list. FAQPage schema on pages that answer questions.
None of that is a trick. It is just writing that is easy to extract from, and it happens to also be easier for humans to read.
Get an llms.txt file up
A plain text file at your domain root describing what your business does, what you offer, and where the important pages are. It takes twenty minutes and it gives every crawler an unambiguous summary rather than making it infer one from your homepage.
Almost nobody has one. That is exactly why it is worth doing now.
Mentions matter more than links
Traditional SEO runs on links. AI citation runs substantially on being mentioned, described and discussed across the web, whether or not those mentions carry a link.
Directory listings, industry publications, podcast appearances, forum discussions where your business is named. All of it feeds the model's understanding of who you are and what you are authoritative about.
Test it directly
This is the part people skip. Open ChatGPT and Perplexity, ask the exact questions your buyers ask, and see who gets cited.
You will learn more in fifteen minutes than from any report. You will see which competitors own which questions, what shape of content gets pulled, and where the gaps are.
Then go write the answer that should have been cited instead.
