Why Your Website is Not Converting (And How to Fix It)
Your website gets traffic but nobody enquires. Here are the 7 most common conversion killers and the fixes that turn visitors into leads.
You are driving traffic to your website. People are visiting. But nobody is filling out the form, clicking the button, or picking up the phone.
This is not a traffic problem. It is a conversion problem. And it is almost always caused by one of these seven issues.
1. Your headline does not match visitor intent
When someone lands on your website, they make a decision in under 5 seconds: is this what I was looking for?
If your headline says "Welcome to ABC Marketing - Your Digital Partner" and they searched for "marketing agency that guarantees results," there is a disconnect. The headline does not match their intent. They bounce.
Fix: Your headline should mirror what brought the visitor there. If they clicked an ad about performance marketing, the landing page headline should be about performance marketing. Not your company name. Not a vague tagline.
2. Too many choices
Every additional option on a page reduces the likelihood of any action being taken. This is the paradox of choice. A homepage with 6 navigation items, 3 CTAs, 2 pop-ups, and a chatbot is overwhelming.
Fix: Each page should have one primary action. On your homepage, it might be "Book a call." On a service page, it might be "Get a quote." Remove everything that does not support that one action.
3. No social proof above the fold
People do not trust businesses. They trust other people who have used businesses. If someone lands on your site and sees no testimonials, no client logos, no results - they have no reason to believe your claims.
Fix: Put social proof as close to the top of the page as possible. Client logos, a testimonial quote, a key statistic ("Our average client generates $3M+/year"). This should be visible without scrolling.
4. Your CTA is weak or hidden
"Submit" is not a CTA. "Learn more" is barely a CTA. These are generic, uninspiring, and tell the visitor nothing about what happens next.
Fix: Make your CTA specific and outcome-oriented. "Get Your Free Marketing Audit" is better than "Submit." "See How We Generate $3M+/Year for Clients" is better than "Learn More." The button should be visually obvious - contrasting colour, large enough to tap on mobile.
5. The page loads too slowly
Every additional second of load time reduces conversions by 7-12%. If your website takes more than 3 seconds to load, you are losing leads before they even see your content.
Fix: Compress images, remove unnecessary scripts, use a fast hosting provider. Run your site through Google PageSpeed Insights and fix anything flagged as critical.
6. Not mobile-optimised
Over 60% of web traffic is mobile. If your site is not designed for mobile first, you are delivering a poor experience to the majority of your visitors.
Fix: Test your entire website on your phone. Can you read the text without zooming? Can you tap the buttons easily? Does the form work? If anything is frustrating on mobile, fix it immediately.
7. No clear value proposition
Visitors need to understand three things within 10 seconds:
- What do you do?
- Who do you do it for?
- Why should they choose you over alternatives?
If your homepage takes 30 seconds of reading to answer these questions, most visitors will not invest that time.
Fix: Answer all three questions above the fold. Clear heading, one-line subheading, supporting proof point. At Ignis, our value proposition is immediately clear: premium marketing that scales businesses, 1,000,000 views in 6 months or you don't pay until we do.
The quick audit
Go to your website right now and answer honestly:
- Can a stranger understand what you do in 5 seconds?
- Is there one clear action you want them to take?
- Is there social proof visible without scrolling?
- Does the page load in under 3 seconds?
- Does it work perfectly on mobile?
- Does the CTA tell them what happens when they click?
If you answered "no" to any of these, you have found your conversion problem. Fix the weakest point first, then move to the next.
Your website should be your best salesperson - working 24 hours a day, never taking a break, consistently converting visitors into leads. If it is not doing that, the issue is almost always one of these seven things.
